CA: Yes on Propositions 1B, 1E; no on 1C, 1D
The Argus ^ | Oct. 1, 2006 | The Argus

-Proposition 1B: The biggest chunk, $19.9 billion, is for transportation projects that will cost $38.9 billion to repay. Most of the money, $11.3 billion, would be spent to improve highways and local roads... YES

Proposition 1C allots $2.85 billion for housing and shelter...But this is a sector of our economy in which public and private funds compete. NO

Proposition 1D would upgrade and build more schools at every level...NO

Proposition 1E is a $4.1 billion bond to improve disaster preparedness and flood prevention...YES

We cant afford everything we need right now. But voting no on every measure is not in our states best interest, either. Providing funds for our crumbling transportation infrastructure and vulnerable levees are our most pressing needs.

Yes, many of the roads are in poor condition.

Huge amounts of money are collected to go to the "roads" already in various taxes. Much of it never makes to the claimed cause. In addition huge amounts of money are spent on endless environmental reports/projects on our roads that make simple projects needlessly complex and expensive. It is about time we spent out money more wisely instead of trying to throw more money at it just like we do our schools.

The politicians always short our our roads and law enforcement (direct the funds elsewhere) because they know they can always go back for more. I'm tired of it.

CA has the worst roads in the nation

Sorry, that's nonsense. Take a drive through southwestern PA if you want to see bad roads.

Had to make room for solar roofs and after-school-programs.

I wonder how his "hydrogen highway" is coming?

... I question whether the solution is more borrowing. The problem is the legislature spends money on its silly leftists pet projects ... Seems to me all the borrowing approach would do would be to let the leftists satisfy the clamor for better roads without sacrificing any of their pet programs. Make them choose.

That's exactly the message that Assemblyman Villines was sending in the above linked article. His conclusion:

Let's set the record straight. The majority party in Sacramento rarely meets a tax increase it can't support. The fiscally responsible members of the Legislature understand that higher taxes and bonding are not the only way to fund transportation projects. ... citizens of California should vote No on Proposition 1B. Force the Legislature to produce a transportation infrastructure plan for our future that is responsible, realistic and result driven.

In other words, CUT UP THE CREDIT CARDS! This bonding is just another TAX.

Support 1B and you Support Higher Taxes and more Socialism.

"Last year the state (CA)'s roads were third worst in the nation. With 37 percent of 168,000 miles of state and local roads rated poor, the state has fallen to dead last on the list, according to The Road Information Program, which prepared the study.

Other states in the bottom five were Louisiana, 27 percent; Massachusetts, 25 percent; and New Jersey and Missouri, 21 percent. "

You think roads in PA are bad, they didn't even make the five worst list.

I already is said it a gazillion times that I vote straight Republican ticket, even in the case of lost causes like Mountjoy and Simon (when he ran against Gray Davis).

I also don't vote for people like Ross Perot, to have the nation end up with President Clinton.

I, as opposed to some others here, DO consider the consequences of my actions.

As I said before, it's quite possible that other aren't naive, but they also consider the consequences of their actions and are DELIBERATELY trying to divide the Republicans and get conservatives to stay home, so the Dems can win.

The article was from 2001. I haven't been able to find a more recent assessment, but it's most likely that the roads kept getting worse.

Thanks, Arnold!

Proposition 42, passed by voters in 2002, sets aside a portion of gas taxes for new freeway and transit projects but allows for its suspension in times of fiscal emergencies.

Sunne Wright McPeak, Schwarzenegger's secretary of the Business, Housing and Transportation Agency, said the state was in such dire financial shape that borrowing transportation funding was the only way to avoid deep cuts in other critical services.

==

so let me see if I got this right, 11.3 B is closer to half rather than most of the 19.9 B bond btw , we will spend 11.3 B on roads and such but 8.6 B will go towards other stuff and 19.0 B will go toward the repayment of the bond,, What a deal!

It don't get no more porky than that..
PorkBonds ,, the other white meat.

Hey, a whole 29% of the 38.9 billion will go for roads. Unless Arnold decides he needs to "borrow" the funds again.

The Road Information Program is a nonprofit org
http://www.tripnet.org/about.htm

They wouldn't happen to be reimbursed for their efforts by contributions from folks in the highway and heavy construction industries, by chance?

We shouldn't be using State general funds to pay for local roads. Why should folks in Eureka pay for local roads in Los Angeles?

I don't particularly have any desire to support socialists, do you?

Keep in mind this is a conservative forum by its very nature,, and not the kind of place accounts like you should expect to find a lot of favor or undecided votes at, not that that seems to matter much in the way your account insults folks who don't walk lockstep and such with the socialist agenda that is amazingly allowed to be peddled here these days by some .

Democrat Sunne Wright McPeak, the Business, Transportation and Housing secretary leading the charge to "borrow" our transportation funds, was appointed by Schwarzenegger.
