Canada has never armed the Customs & Immigration officials stationed on the U.S. border.
It's always been an UNDEFENDED border.
Judging by the comments of some on this thread, you'd think we should be setting tank-traps by the Peace Arch.
In any event, these government employees will be armed soon enough. I, for one, do not see this as a security improvement - just posturing, imho.

More to the point, Canada does not care who uses their country to enter ours
This has been a serious problem going back to the Cold War years when Soviet Agents used the Canadian Border to enter the U.S. undetected .
Canada does not border any other country, landwise, except the US ~ ~ ~ ~ so those who enter Canada from anywhere else have the Canadian 'openess' to enter Canada by Air or Sea travel .
Anyone from any Third World Country could have gotten a tourist visa to enter Canada - - then scurry on down to ours . . .
