I remember asking my father, at that time, why we were at odds with the British and French, that I thought they were our friends after all I had heard of WWII and Korea.

international, not Egyptian (Nasser) control
The canal was under Anglo-French control; as that is two nations, I guess that qualifies as international.

The reason for Israel's involvement was to reopen the canal to Israeli shipping; also Nasser and the Saudis were blocking Israeli shipping to Eilat. Both blockades were contravening international law, but that's typical of Arab and other Moslem states.

After Israel knocked Egypt out of Sinai, and the US (Eisenhower admin) refused to back the British-French intrigue to take back control, the Arab states and various non-governmental organizations (IOW terrorist groups) saw western disunity. By 1958 the US had committed troops to Lebanon (not for the last time, obviously), which to this day remains on Syria's hit list of territorial claims. When the PLO and Syria destabilized Lebanon in the 1970s and overthrew the gov't, the MSM acted as if this came out of the blue.
