Moderate Muslims Urged to Speak Out

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Moderate Muslims must take a stand against extremists, speakers said Saturday at a conference marking a year since the publication of Prophet Muhammad cartoons that led to violent demonstrations in Muslim countries.
The 12 drawings, first published in the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten in September, were reprinted in several European countries four months later, prompting angry mobs to attack Western embassies in countries including Lebanon, Iran and Indonesia.
The cartoons, which included a drawing of the prophet with a bomb-shaped turban, were seen as highly insulting by many followers of Islam, which is interpreted as barring even respectful images of Muhammad for fear of prompting idolatry.
Mona Eltahawy, an Egyptian-born journalist and commentator based in New York City, urged moderate Muslims to speak up against violent reactions like the massive protests and riots in late January and February.
Syrian-born psychologist Wafa Sultan said moderate Muslims have always struggled to make their voice heard even within their own religion, but that the cartoon uproar gave them a platform to present their ideas to the whole world.
``The cartoon crisis was the first step to break out of the box in which we have been sitting since the 7th century,'' Sultan said, referring to the time of Islam's founding. ``We as Muslims must learn to listen to others' opinion.''

*crickets chirping*
RIGHT Blame RIGHT LOL!
I doubt it
cue crickets chirping....
Do you get a full contingent of virgins if you are "martyred" in the Cartoon Jihad? Are you met in paradise by Olive Oyle ans Alice the Goon?
Sharing the planet with the Middle east is like living on the same block with one of those crazy families. You know, one of those families that doesn't keep their house up, shouts and cries can be heard late at night, awkward glances follow awkward hellos when you pass by, and everyone in the household, including even the ones you fear are being abused just want you to mind your own business.
It's just a weird situation all around. Part of you thinks to just let it alone. The other part of you wants to call the police and make it your business before it becomes your business against your will
Oh....I sware I heard a pin drop.
dam crickets.....
"Moderate Muslims"...
Another oxymoron like "Military Intelligence"?
Moderate Muslim = Muslim at room temperature.
... damned crickets.
I'm really starting to wonder if all these "calls" for moderate Islamic voices to "speak out" are nothing but a ploy to point out that vital fact that is overlooked by broad numbers of people: there is no such thing as a "moderate Muslim"! "Moderate Islam" is a myth!!!
Now, admittedly, there are certainly people whom CALL themselves Muslims and are "moderate", but they are assuredly not the former. They may or may not be aware of this fact... they are defined by their LUKEWARMNESS.
The lukewarmness of individual Muslims is pretty much what redeems the majority of them. Islam, much like Christianity, frowns upon lukewarmness, but in Islam's case lukewarmness is actually a redeeming quality. But, unfortunately, those that are lukewarm are not inclined to do much speaking out on matters regarding Islam... apart from its cultural impact, it's not really all that important to them.
I remember, back when 9/11 occurred, people in the West hoping for a sort of "Islamic Reformation"... but that's not what it needs. The Middle East needs a sort of "Capitalist Secularization", where, through media, marketing, and high living standards, people just don't really care to get caught up in such violent thoughts anymore...
The only good Muslim is a bad Muslim.
Yeah.
Moderate Muslims SHOULD speak out - all three of them.
There are moderate muslims, but they sure don't have the balls to speak out. It's such a sad state of affairs in europe when europeans have to hide in their own country because they critisize islam. So do you think moderate muslims are going to speak out?
The whole Danish thing makes my blood boil. They stuck by their guns on printing the cartoons, but now some in denmark start questioning themselves. This is the easiest path to self destruction, DOUBT.
ROFLOL. Ideas? Riots over simple-minded cartoons is a "platform"? For a good sample of the "ideas" that the Islamderthals contribute to the world, check out the deep thoughts about using the siwaak during the day in Ramadaan.
