This year's 231st Marine Corps Birthday Ball will be held on Saturday Nov 11 from 1800 - 0300 at the Inter-Continental Hotel (across the street from the U.S. Embassy). The ball is THE event of the year for the Embassy; it's not only a great time, but also a very special event for the Marines.

(Ed. Note: The U.S. Marine Corps celebrates its birthday on November 10 because on November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress voted to raise two battalions of Continental Marines. The history buffs among us will be pleased to learn that the November date was chosen because of a careful historian. During the American Revolution, the Marines fought on land and sea, but when the Revolution ended, the Corps, and the American Navy itself, were virtually disbanded. On July 11, 1798, President John Adams signed a congressional bill recreating the Corps—and for 123 years thereafter July 11 was commemorated as the Corps’ birthday. In October 1921, the officer in charge of the Marines’ Historical Section, Maj. Edwin McClellan, sent a memo to the Marines’ commandant, Maj. Gen. John Lejeune, pointing out that the Corps had of course begun before the Revolution and suggesting that November 10 be declared its birthday and be celebrated thenceforth. As a Marine historian writes, “Accordingly, on 1 November 1921, Major General Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921. The order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps, and directed that it be read to every command on 10 November each subsequent year in honor of the birthday of the Marine Corps. This order has been duly carried out.”)

Buy your tickets now if you'll be in the neighborhood Nov 11.

I have a relative by marriage who has been in the State Dept. for >20 years and has served abroad for most of that. He has always spoken so well of the Marine Guard at the embassies' he's served at.

And, I have a cousin who was drafted into the Marines in the seventies (yes, that happened, and you can look it up). Good he was a tough kid, because he was a Jew. He loved his time in the Corps.

And, I'm a RevWar buff.
