Schwarzenegger Surging Ahead as Vote Nears

The governor takes a commanding lead, with many Democrats and independents saying they support him. A key issue is leadership skill.

Just over five weeks before election day, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a commanding lead over his Democratic challenger, state Treasurer Phil Angelides, who has built scant support beyond a core base of liberals, according to a new Los Angeles Times Poll.

If the Nov. 7 election were held today, likely voters would favor the Republican governor over Angelides 50% to 33%.

The survey found an abundance of grim signs for Angelides, including a failure to match Schwarzenegger's success in rallying voters of his own party strongly behind his candidacy. Just 61% of Democrats support Angelides, while 88% of Republicans favor Schwarzenegger. And independents, a crucial swing vote, support Schwarzenegger over Angelides 49% to 31%.

Voters in Afghanistan and Iraq braved great danger to get to the polls for a chance to vote. Their turnout at the polls puts us to shame.

Shameful is right.

Part of the DICC strategy is to shame, blame, intimidate ~ whatever it takes to devalue the voting process.

The LAT poll about down-ticket candidates shows that:

8% of Republicans plan to vote for Garamendi, not McClintock;

20% Republicans plan to vote for Jerry Brown, not Poochigian;

11% plan to vote for Bustamante, not Poizner.

I bet those are the same ones who are agitating against Arnold and won't tell us they plan to vote for Angelides.

Arnold is obviously not a Reagan Republican but he is the only one right now keeping Calif. from completely sinking into the cesspool of collectivism and socialism, which Angelides would love to see happen.

All Arnold's doing is setting up a huge Dim victory in 2010.

The CAGOP will stab McClintock in the back, and there won't be any other Republican that has Arnold's star power and money. The Republican candidate will have no choice but to run as a out-and-out liberal because Arnold has already moved the ideological goal posts to the left of center. Villargrosia will easily cruise to victory and the Reconquista will begin and hopefully FR will move its headquarters to Texas.

Arnold will win re-election.

Because of McClintock, not because in spite of him.

Much better to give the Dems victory right now by electing Angelides, right?

You demonstrated yet again, that you are .. a mouthpiece FOR socialist, leftist Angelides.

Please explain why removing a liberal from the Republican Party would be the goal of a socialist. Those who believe in socialism generally attempt to first toilet train the practitioners of opposing political philosophies with a liberal. Schwarzenegger makes a fine set of potty steps for conservatives.

Please explain why opposing the election of an individual with dual citizenship, to a high public office in the US, is contrary to either Republican or conservative principles and further indicates a preference for socialism. I was under the impression that a border less, one world concept, was a socialist goal.

Please explain how exposing candidate A as a charlatan constitutes an assertive support for candidate B, or any of the other candidates running for the same office. By that confused logic the American Revolutionary War was fought to impose French rule on British colonies.

From Gov Arnold to the people of California: "I WILL WIN AGAIN, SO JUST SIT BACK, RELAX, I'M GOING TO PUMP YOU UP!"

It's great news for CALIFORNIA and eveyone living here.

Even those, like yourself, who are trying do everything in their power to get Angelides elected, and scuttle CA's recovery, will benefit from the improved economy, that results in Arnold getting reelected and making the state more business friendly.

Nice strawman, but that's not what I'm implying. Arnold could have at least governed as a classic Republican moderate, (fiscal conservative/social liberal), and the CAGOP could have groomed McClintock or a genuine conservative Republican for 2010.

Instead, Arnold has become so liberal that any Republican running for Governor in the future is screwed. The only chance is McClintock, and you and I both know that Arnold and the party are going to pull a Katherine Harris on him. Other Republicans running in 2010 will lack Arnold's star power and cash.

FO, nobody's working on behalf of the DNC or "getting Angelides elected." This is cheap-shot and I wish you'd refrain from it.

Exactly. And Arnold will make liberal policies a bipartisan consensus by 2010. That's the real danger.

The question is whether there will be sufficient GOP turnout to carry McClintock,

Confusing refusal to vote for a liberal at the top of the CaGOP ticket with Republican turnout is a favorite ploy of partisan Republicans.

Don't fall for it. Republicans will turn out in droves. Senator McClintock will receive more Republican votes than Schwarzenegger, just as he did in the Republicans primary this past June.

Republicans are motivated by the recent shenanigans in Sacramento. Republicans will turn out to stop the liberal, initiatives being promoted by the Austrian (1B,C,D & E,), the five tax measures (84, 86, 87, 88, 89) and to support the initiative being shepherded by McClintock (90).

It's great news for CALIFORNIA and eveyone living here.

Why so he can have another four years to seize public lands from mining and logging?

So he can create more global warming initiatives and throttle manufacturing and industry?

So he can devise a nice Marxist means to extract higher gas taxes from "the rich?"

So he can sign more bills restricting state services and resources to people of Faith?

So he can continue to spend, spend, spend and borrow, borrow, borrow with out ever giving a thought to actually reducing the size of government?

So he can continue to set arbitrary wage levels the way they did in the Soviet Union?

Why is any of that good for CALIFORNIA?

Yes, I can see that you would be so much happier with Angelides as governor -- fortunately most of the rest of people in CA know better.

Since you will be so unhappy with Arnold being reelected, and Angelides losing, have you considered moving to Cuba?

We'd have a Sweden On The Pacific. Presided over by Republicans whose affection for the welfare state is matched only by the Democrats' zeal for it.
