Finally. This was a last minute add-on to the Port Security bill that passed both the House and Senate late last night, just before adjournment.

I've had a couple of buddies lose a few grand on these Texas Hold'em poker websites. They are really awful. It's about time Congress took a stand against these websites that are preying on the most vulnerable members of our society.

Here are some comments from Bill Frist available on his website:

September 29th, 2006 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., (R-Tenn.) made the following statement after the Senate passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act:

“Gambling is a serious addiction that undermines the family, dashes dreams, and frays the fabric of society. Congress has grappled with this issue for 10 years, and during that time we’ve watched this shadow industry explode. For me as majority leader, the bottom line is simple: Internet gambling is illegal. Although we can’t monitor every online gambler or regulate offshore gambling, we can police the financial institutions that disregard our laws.”

Good riddance.

I believe Clarence Thomas describes this kind of exercise as "appropriating state police powers under the guise of regulating commerce".

Your buddies should take responsibility for their own actions. The "Victim" mentality which wants to blame everyone else for their own problems and shortcoming is weak and pathetic at best.

Glad the War on Terror is over so that we can finally go after the things that really matter, like gambling sites.

Vulnerable..You mean numbskulls with no self control and no sense of personal responsibility?

How is this any different from the lib do-gooders trying to get a "fat tax" on fast food and sweets?

It's McDonald's and KFC's fault for making me 400 lbs!

It's that websites fault for forcing me to gamble away $400!

I agree with you. The Constitution grants the federal government the right to regulate interstate commerce, which online gambling is. I think this legislation is good.

Mo money for Injun casinos. They love this bill. I have a friend that gambles backgammon and poker on line. Money transfers are done by net teller. No credit card involved.

So who held the gun to their heads?

Be careful of what you wish for my friend, with the right people in power, FR may eventually be considered a subversive website that needs to be banned by your friends in Congress..........

More government control to protect the idiots and even so called conservatives approve............

"It's about time Congress took a stand against these websites that are preying on the most vulnerable members of our society."

You've absolutely no clue what "personal responsibility" means, eh?
Obviously given your sentiments as expressed above justifying this malarkey you don't seem to grasp personal responsibility is the bedrock of conservatism.
You may be an Alterboy pal but you're certainly no "conservative", you're a Socialist. >doink!<

Instead of personal accountability/responsibility? You appear perfectly content leaving such matters up to the totally incompetent, corrupt politicians in our nanny government to once again restrict our precious, and rapidly dwindling freedoms.
Why you'd permit that is apparently because you've a couple real losers for "friends", too.

Suggestion.
Be (a LOT) more selective who you're picking for friends & leave your damned hands OFF my rights.

...OK, pal? ;^)

What's awful, the websites or the buddies?

I'd lay long odd that nobody was twisting your buddies' arms.

This isn't about helping people, it's about increasing Casino revenues and taxes.

The same week North Carolina began it's lottery the state legislature banned video poker machines. No need for people to be gabling on anything other than a state run franchise.
