While in college 28 years ago, 2nd District Democratic congressional candidate Philip Kellam pleaded guilty to a simple assault charge after an argument with a woman, but the judge threw the case out.
Kellam's campaign manager said Kellam, then a student at Elon College, did not strike the woman.
Kellam, commissioner of revenue in Virginia Beach and a member of a famous political family, is in a close race with Rep. Thelma Drake, a Norfolk Republican, for the congressional seat...
After Kellam pleaded guilty June 2, 1978, in Alamance County {N.C.] court to simple assault, a judge entered a "prayer for judgment," a legal term that effectively dismissed the case, Bird said. The alleged assault occurred in May 1978...
According to the court document, Kellam was charged with assault on a female. He pleaded guilty to simple assault and a prayer for judgment was entered.
Kellam was ordered to pay court costs and not molest the woman, according to the court document.
Kelly said the incident occurred when Kellam was driving with his future wife, Andi, and the woman cut off his car. Andi Kellam hit her head against the windshield.
Philip Kellam and the other woman argued. An entry posted Sept. 22 on an Internet blog by a man describing himself as the woman's husband, and now widely circulated, quoted the woman as saying Kellam beat on her car, reached through her car window and pulled her hair.
Kelly said Kellam did not.
"Two hotheads got into an argument," he said.
In a statement issued by the campaign, Kellam said he regrets his actions 28 years ago.
"I have certainly experienced much more of life and developed a greater depth of character over the past 28 years and have sought to live my life with honesty and dignity." ...

Is this part of Roves October Suprises?
Well, it's not like he actually raped someone. Then his political career would be over. What? Oh. Never mind...
This guy's a lousy politician, but come on guys, this is a 28 year old minor traffic altercation.
If he were a Republican it would be on the front page of the Washington Post for a week, and half dozen reporters would be culling through every nook and cranny of his past as you read this.
Nah... Rove will get out the hurricane machine and Bush will be in Florida and will put up his hand and it will go back out to sea.
And everyone here would just say it was 28 yr ago, and it means nothing now.
This isn't my district, but close enough. Isn't this Phil Kellam a grandson of THE Kellams of Virginia Beach, grandfather a bigshot judge and the rest of the Kellam's, owners of huge tracts of land and businesses in VABeach?
I remember talk about the Kellam's as being pretty arrogant. Wouldn't surprise me that the judge in Richmond dismissed the charge. Professional courtesy, I suppose.
I believe they are one and the same.
Yep, probably because the family pulled more than a few strings.
"I believe they are one and the same."
I wonder if the family owned slaves at one time? Kellam's are an old family in VABeach, or as it was known prior to incorporation, Princess Anne County.
