Well, eyewitnesses of air disasters aren't known for reliability. You can read any NTSB report and find that almost all give reports that are somewhat inaccurate or even totally wrong. It isn't on purpose but what they believed they saw.

Right now, I'm not going to start speculating what the cause might have been. Too many people love to assign a cause when all they have are 10% of the facts and a lot of rumor.
