Foley beat his opponent more than 2-1 the last time. In 1998 he ran unopposed. In other words, it should be a safe Republican district. If Foley had resigned sooner, another Republican might have won the seat in November. I don't know what the rules are about write-in campaigns, but this close to the general election it would probably require someone who is already well-known to step forward as a candidate.

Basically it is like the DeLay seat -- they have to pick a write in candidate with a big name which can be spelled easily.

Foley made a big issue 2 years ago opposing a beach for nude teen-agers. There were changes that he was gay at the time, but apparently not with kids! At the time Foley said: "My sexuality is private Questions about homosexuality 'revolting and unforgivable'" I have always been suspicious of this kind of non-denial denial.
