That being said, this kind of behavior is stupid - it lowers us to their level, it gives them an excuse to be violent, and has no strategic value.
It would make more sense to whack a radical imam than to do this.

Not really. If it provokes another riot, it will (hopefully) further reduce tolerance of Islam. If it keeps up, hopefully, one day, the cops will respond rioting Muslims with machineguns.
