Funny you should ask that today. I just read an article in the last day or two (can't remember where off-hand, maybe National Review?) that talked about how the best colleges in the country from which to receive an good liberal arts education are the military academies. The article discussed the curriculae and described how cadets are required to learn critical thinking, logical evaluation, and how to formulate a supportable argument. The old stereotype about cadets being taught to mouth the party line appears to be invalid.

That's all I know about the education provided by the academies.

I don't know the whole answer to that, but I caught part of an excellent CNN documentary titled "In the Footsteps of Bin Laden", produced by Christine Ahmanpour, that was very informative.

What I remember is that in his younger years OBL was considered somewhat cowardly by the Saudis, and he went to Afghanistan at least partly to establish a better reputation for himself. He got caught in the Afghan war against Russia and actually fought courageously.

I recommend the documentary--I'm going to try to get a copy myself.
