Without getting into the overall dubious merits of the public education system, physical education including team sports is worthwhile from both a health/fitness point of view as well as for the positive lessons/values it imparts to young people.

Aside from virtually all private schools including team sports within their curriculums for these reasons, it seems far more likely kids in the public system will learn numerous traditional moral precepts of value to society as a whole on playing fields than within classrooms under the tutelage of "Priests of the Church of Liberalism" as Ann Coulter rightly calls them.

If parents agree, they can pay to send their kids to such clubs. Kids can even play ball in the neighborhood.

I still don't see how this is an essential govermental function.
