I was fortunate enough to attend the USAF Academy Band concert this past summer at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I videotaped the two hour program.
One of the highlights of the program was the featured soloist, MSGT Gary Poffenbarger, playing a selection on his tuba.
I have uploaded this selection on YouTube.com and it can be viewed at the following address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7jpB-5NxW4
It is a delightful performance from the great and grand MSGT Poffenbarger.
Thanks, I'll take a look later.
Okay, let me know what you think of it. The clip is four minutes long.
BUMP for TUBAS!
I just listened. Thanks for sharing, it was just beautiful.
I thought it was TERRIFIC. Thanks for posting...book marked it.
YouTuba?
It is interesting, I only noticed one slightly missed note. It happened on an attack, but he recovered OK.
For what it's worth, I am a graduate of the U.S.Navy School of Music at littlecreek Va. I went there back in 1964 and served my military duty in first the 5th Army headquarters Band at Ft Sheridan Il which was a truely great band, and then with the 74th Army band at Ft Benjamin Harrison In (Uncle Bennies Rest Home).
My major is tuba and I received what at the time was the hignest incoming audition score ever for tuba at the Navy school of music.
After getting out of the army, I spent 8 yers as a member of the great Joliet American Legion band from Joliet Il which won 35 national titles in 37 attempts, finishing twice the other two times. During the 80's, I played with that band atop of Pikes Peak in Colorado and also won a gold medal in International competition in Toronto. That band to this day remains the ONLY adult band from North America to ever win a gold medal in international competition.
In regards to the sgts performance, I suspect he was playing an 'F' tuba because of the high range. He didn't hit any low notes at all. I usually played a BBb or an Eb model.
I also played french Horn and trumpet as well as tuba while in the army and for a few years, I played a Silver Plated Willson Euphonium while with the Joliet band.
Tanks tutstar, how you do dat?
I 'slightly missed' years, typing yers instead, sorry. lol
I'm impressed.
Me tubby though.
Impressed that I admitted 'missing 'years? lol
Do you have a video clip we might view?
Amazing talent. Are you still playing? It would be ashame to not use your talent.
go down the page not even 1/4 down (great link for other html commands)right underneath the picture that saya China Spy Guide for the following instructions:

I have a VHS tape of the legion band with me playing the Wilson euphonium, but no shots of only me on tuba. I have an old phono record of me playing a solo in high school, but no phonograph player to play it and a few hundred other records on.
I've been retired with disabilities since December of 2000 and I have let a lot of my skills lapse.
Two major car accidents in the 80s and a final accident in Dec 2000 pretty much keep me from lifting andplaying any heavy instruments today.
You may want to go back and view the other clip I uploaded of MSGT Poffenbarger. It is about twice as long as the first.
