Schwarzenegger Vetoes Drivers Licenses for Illegal Aliens (Says "premature")
Governor's Website ^ | 09/28/2006

Posted on 09/28/2006 7:04:11 PM PDT by calcowgirl

To the Members of the California State Senate:

I am returning Senate Bill 1162 without my signature.

This issue has been the subject of a number of prior legislative attempts. Last year I vetoed a similar measure, SB 60, because action on this issue is premature until federal regulations are promulgated to implement the REAL ID Act. We are still awaiting those regulations.

Given the potential impact of the REAL ID Act on the public safety and homeland security of Californians, members of my administration are working with the federal government to develop those regulations and secure funds necessary to implement the Act. Until the REAL ID Act is implemented and the federal government adopts comprehensive immigration reform, it is inappropriate to move forward with state law in this area.

Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger

Just in case any Senators in California don't speak English, he issued the Veto message in Spanish, also:

Atentamente,
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER

This is one of the reasons I votee for Arnold. He is a Rhino but does gives us some of what we want. If Phil was governor he would have voted for it. Again the lessor of two evils.

I guess that's pandering to conservatives. That for them and the global warming measures for the liberals.

Just having Arnold veto Illegal Alien Driver's Licenses again and again makes the Recall worth it.

I think a RINO is about the best you can get in CA. at this point. Things may change in the future.

Nope. Pandering to business.

Had he approved the legislation, all longer distance business travel for Californians would have been by charter jet or rail.

Come on, this is a no-brainer veto from Arnold. He had nothing to gain by signing it - Dems and indies are still going to vote for him anyway.

CA Dems are looking ahead to 2010. Angelides is just a sacrificial lamb for Villagrosia.

Angelides is just a sacrificial lamb for Villagrosia.

In the meantime the Austrian is the legacy that Torres couldn't have because of ... guess who ... Angelides in his former party role as enforcer.

If Art survives as chairman until November 2010, two more election cycles, he will become a saint when a Mexican anchor baby is elected governor. Mahoney will see to it.

The Gub all along has said he wanted "background checks" done`on illegals that get DLs...

Congre$$ choked this year on its way towards enacting a comprehensive immigration reform package that would have included provisions that would have satisfied the gub.

Lucky us, not for having the Gub we have, rather that Congre$$ choked.

Am I the only one worried by this message????

He didn't say that it's idiotic and just plain wrong to give drivers license to illegal aliens. He said it's premature!!!

Do you folks realize what that means? He's going to sign something in the next year or two. Mark my words.

While printing it in Spanish is a good start many elected officials in California need a monosyllabic copy of the announcement.

He didn't say that it's idiotic and just plain wrong...

He never has said it was wrong in any of the multiple veto messages, he's always relied on "background checks" or the Real ID Act, or the like. Had he just said no, in clear terms, we could quit wasting govenment resources and taxpayer dollars on this nonsense. But then, it just doesn't have that melodramatic Hollywood effect.

Before the Recall election, he said:

I'm a conservative because ... and when you look at the drivers' license outrage, I am a conservative because I believe in the rules of the law, not political pandering."

Well, at least he remembered why he was elected. If he hadn't VETO'd this it woud have been a legit betrayal given it was the main issue that got the former tossed. That and the economy.
