(WSBT) A South Bend man was hospitalized with severe burns after he suffered an electrical shock trying to steal copper from a underground power line.

It happened on Sample Street, behind the old South Bend Lathe Building, where the man works. That's where crews are tearing down the old Studebaker Factory.

Police say the man didn't know the lines were charged, and that's why he went ahead and tried to steal the wire.

"The incidents of metal theft have really spiked in the last six to eight months," said David Mayne, spokesman for Indiana Michigan Power. "In the case, of stealing wire off the electric distribution system, you could die for just a few dollars."

At last check, the man was in a Fort Wayne Hospital with serious burns to his arms and face. He has not been identified.

Too bad he didnt die, we could have had a darwin award candidate. Maybe he was too dumb to kill himself.

I read the headline of your post and was going to reply with almost the identical words that you did. We Hoosiers think alike.

Good. I wish this would happen more often. In one of the OKC suburbs last month, someone ripped off some copper wires from a power station (he apparently lived, darnit) and the whole community was without power in 100+ weather.

Talk about the shallow end of the gene pool. Its too bad he did not remove himself completely from the reproductive cycle.

He'll probably sue, claiming that the owner should have had high voltage signs on the wires. Of course, chances are that they did, in which case he'll insist that the signs should have said "Yeah, we know the plant is closed, but the wires are still hot!"
