I am curious about the timing of Armey's remarks. We are currently undergoing what seems to be a coordinated attack on the religious right. Over the past several months, a number of books by noted authors attacking conservative Christians have appeared, including Conservatives Without Conscience by John Dean, American Theocracy by Kevin Phillips, and God's Politics by Jim Wallis. Meanwhile, a number of "progressive" Christian groups have suddenly popped up. Is Armey permitting himself to be a useful idiot for the opponents of the Christian right?

Full court press.

Wander in to a local bookstore like Barnes and Noble and see what the newest "Religion" books are. There has been a flurry of books about how "we need to fight those Christocrats".

I think it reflects a basic cultural shift against the faction of the "religious right" that wishes to enforce its preferences via government coercion, similar to the basic cultural shift against genteel anti-Semitism after WWII.

In both cases, the shift is driven by repulsion against a philosophy that uncomfortably reminds people of the enemy's ideology.

Just because you religious zealots have to be led around my the noise doesnt mean that everyone else has someone else thinking for them.
