Also I read not too long ago that this summer in the U.S. was only a fraction of a degree from breaking the previous heat record in 1936. So I concluded that 1936 was hotter than it is now. Maybe I'm wrong?

Maybe I'm wrong?The 30s were the second-warmest decade of the 20th century; the 90s were the warmest. Current temperatures are about the same as the peak temperatures of the 1990s. The summer of 1936 featured a phenomenal July heat wave that set numerous high temperature records.
