Town square.
General Wade's bridge in beautiful downtown Aberfeldy - one of the many he built in the 1710s to "civilize" northern Scotland . . .
The memorial to the raising of the Black Watch regiment in Aberfeldy, right by Wade's bridge.
The "Birks o' Aberfeldy" that Robert Burns memorialized are near the village, uphill through a wood. You pass the War Memorial on the way to the Birks.
The only pic of the War Memorial that I can find on the internet is copy-protected.
Does this look like where you were? It's a pretty regular tourist stop, because of all the connections with Robt Burns, Gen'l Wade, the Black Watch, etc.
Many thanks for the pictures - this was 15 years ago - I did find a photo or two of the War Memorial - it is an archway with the names inscribed on either side of the arch.
I'm guessing we were in the same town. I was able to figure out that we spent the night in Killiecrankie which is near Pitlochry. Aberfeldy would have been exceedingly close by. All the pictures you posted look *very* familiar. I did find some pictures of the War Memorial

and

and although I don't remember it as an archway I do think are talking about the same place.
What was most striking is how I had the *exact* same impression that you did - it brought the tragedy that was WWI (and that you have so expertly commented on in this thread) home in a very real way.
Thanks so much for the pictures. Great posts.
