Yes, I agree many want to destroy Senator Allen before he can become a candidate for POTUS. Some even on FR.
The issue here is less what he said and didn't say and more on why this is important. We have created a whole clerisy of people accusing others of speech crimes. The penalty for these "speech crimes" is always electoral defeat.
Going back over 30 years to find an alleged reference to "n" word seems childish to me. Politicians are not supposed to be running for archbishop but for secular political office. Politicians do not take a vow of poverty, chastity or always having the best of manners.
What we call "speech crimes" or political correctness is nothing but what we used to call "bad manners."

Senator Byrd is running for reelection in the very next state to Virginia and he used the n word on TV just a few years ago.
Oh, it's ok to use it if you are a democrat. Oh, sorry for the confusion.
