Actually, I suspect the reason the dems are in favor of a draft is so they can complain that there are nonvolunteers dying in a war not of their choosing. Their claims currently ring pretty hollow because we have an all voluntary military.

That is just one of the reasons. The other is that, with a draft, they would be better able to marshal mass protests against the war.

They remember only too well how "popular" the anti-war movement was in Viet Nam -- until Nixon ended the draft. And, then, people stopped showing up for the riots...

Also, it would allow them to cut military pay further (to the point where the total amount spent would be lower even with the larger numbers), thus freeing up funds for more vote-buying boondoggles.
