Hawaii's Republican Party chose state Rep. Cynthia Thielen on Monday to oppose Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka in November's general election.
Thielen is a replacement nominee for former prisoner of war Jerry Coffee. He won Saturday's GOP primary despite withdrawing from the race due to poor health.
Thielen, the assistant minority floor leader, has served in the state House since 1990.

THANKS TO HONOLULUGAL FOR THIS LATEST UPDATE!!!
A Kaka great name for a democrat!!
"A Kaka great name for a democrat!!"
LOL
He is 82?? And Inouye is 87 I think. Some of these guys really should call it quits a lot sooner.
Ping!
Unfortunatly, she probably is ending her political career.
Unlikely. Lingle probably promised her a position in her administration. Additionally, if either Inouye or Akaka should die before the next election (Akaka will be 89 when he next comes up) Lingle will have an appointment (I think).
Hawaii has an unusual election law, in which if a candidate for state office (including legislature) is unopposed, he or she is automatically reelected on the spot. As a result, she doesn't have to give up her seat in the state legislature.
In No Way is 87? Wow!
There we go again, making fun of those macacas!
I will have to check but I believe he was born in 1917 or 1918. We know he is a WW 2 vet so that would most likely put him well into his 80s. Maybe Ed Case was right about needing some new blood. I suppose when one of those senators retires though, if they EVER do, the far left Rep. Abercrombie will run to replace them.
I wish the senators good luck, but IF there should be a vacancy over the next 4 years, I'm glad Gov Lingle will likely be around to appoint a replacement.
Both Inouye and Akaka are 82. They were born exactly 4 days apart, Inouye on 9/7/1924 and Akaka on 9/11/1924.
Daniel Inouye has got to be 87, at least! I can remember when we had just started in the real estate sign business about 50 years ago, we were making them for Inouye because he was in the real estate business in Hawaii.
OK I was wrong about that. Thanks for the info. When I said 1917 I guess I was getting him mixed up with Sen Byrd, who is 89 I think. He'll probably stay in office til he's about 1000....
How old is Sen Burns? He really should have retired this year. By running again he is almost certain to cost the GOP a seat, and in a state GWB carried by such large margins. Awful.
Oh my, Im glad Massachusetts doesnt have this. If they did, the "solons" would be trying to get promotions at every election.
Yup, Byrd is the one born in 1917 (the oldest member of Congress of either body).
Conrad Burns is a relative youngster, born in 1935 (he'll be 72 in January), and is only the 22nd oldest Senator of the current members.
The *11 oldest U.S. Senators are as follows:
Robert Byrd (D-WV), 89 on 11/17 (1917)
Ted Stevens (R-AK), 83 in November (1923)
Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), 83 in January (1924)
Daniel Inouye (D-HI), 82 (1924)
Daniel Akaka (D-HI), 82 (1924)
John Warner (R-VA), 79 (1927)
Arlen Specter (R-PA), 76 (1930)
Jim Bunning (R-KY), 75 in October (1931)
Ted Kennedy (D-MA), 74 (1932)
Richard Lugar (R-IN), 74 (1932)
Pete Domenici (R-NM), 74 (1932)
(*I included an additional since the bottom 3 were all born the same year). You'll note none of the oldest members are retiring this year, either (at least not voluntarily, though 4 (Byrd, Kennedy, Akaka, Lugar) are up for reelection).
At 73, Thielen is no fresh face, but if she has even an outside chance of winning, that's all right by me.
One of the most important positions in the nation is Physician for the U.S. Senate. At the rate things are going, it'll need geriatric desks.
I'm sure a few aren't going to be happy that Frist is going. It's rather handy having a heart surgeon right there on the floor, although I'm sure Frist would have a hard time locating that organ on most of the 'Rats.
Of course, I'm sure the one reason Daschle is happy to no longer be Senator is that he doesn't have to serve diaper duty for Frank Lautenberg.
