I was in grade school for duck and cover, remember it well. Because of the air force base, the helium plant, and proximity to Pantex where nukes are assembled, Amarillo was in the Top Ten of that particular Hit Parade. We believed it and lived it.

As you say, a pin prick nuke would change our world view... but would it change how we look at the internal threat, ie, radicalized home growns and border security? That our response is up for debate is an answer of sorts itself.

We were not far from a major B-52 base. The airplanes were always making contrail circles in the sky, dozens of them. I pictured all of them suddenly breaking off the circles and heading north, and that was when I would head for the bunker myself.
