S.F. supe goes ballistic over police officers' anti-Daly T-shirt

. . . Party hearty:

The state Republican Party is so emboldened by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's surge in the polls that it's turning its attention -- and money -- to the down-ticket races such as lieutenant governor and attorney general.

The first beneficiary of the newfound GOP largesse was Tom McClintock, the conservative GOP nominee for lieutenant governor whom the new, more moderate Arnold seems to be avoiding like the plague. He got a GOP-paid TV ad slamming rival Democrat John Garamendi.

Next up was attorney general candidate Chuck Poochigian, who got a radio ad labeling Democratic rival Jerry Brown as soft on crime.

Given the state's $5,600 cap on individual contributions per candidate, raising piles of money for down-ticket races is no easy task. So for a candidate, every dime -- or paid-for ad -- that comes in from the side is worth its weight in gold.

The Democratic motto, meanwhile, seems to be, "Every man, woman and child for themselves."

Not only is there no money for down-ticket candidates from the state party, but at one recent sit-down in Sacramento, party officials actually asked the hopefuls to come up with $1.5 million between them for a get-out-the-vote drive.

No one rushed for their wallets.

As for that $25 million that labor has pledged to spend fighting Arnold -- the feeling all around seems to be, "We'll believe it when we see it."

Thanks for the ping.

They say "newfound GOP largesse", but only describe a couple of actions that the Party itself took on behalf of the candidate. I'd like to see them give some money to the campaign itself, since the Party is the only one that has no $ limit on contributions directly to candidates. Hopefully they will soon.

BTW, have they endorsed Mountjoy yet? How about Proposition 90?
