That would make sense, over time, because it killed all the less resistant strains, but was that the reason given for banning it?

I think that was the primary reason. It MAY also have some effects on a fetus during pregnancy (not shown in humans - only animal testing) and various other side effects, especially in infants and babies. Mainly it was blamed for allowing "superbugs" to survive that are very resistant. Of course you can still get it by prescription, but usually your doc will start you out on something less powerful.
