Leaders Highlight Successes of Baghdad Operation

During the three day operation, Iraqi National police and U.S. Army soldiers rooted out terrorists and death squads.

By U.S. Army Spc. Jason Dangel BAGHDAD, Sept. 19, 2006 -- The Rasheed District Advisory Council (DAC) Chairman and Multi-National Division – Baghdad's (MND-B) 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, hosted a question and answer session with local and international media outlets at the Rasheed District Advisory Council Headquarters in southern Baghdad Sept. 13.

Mr. Sabeehr Al-Kaabi, Rasheed DAC Chairman, and Lt. Col. James Danna, commander, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, took the opportunity to discuss recent security operations in Baghdad’s Risalah neighborhood while highlighting the successes of Operation Together Forward.

“We had great support from the Rasheed District Advisory Council members who brought up to us their concerns about the situation in Risalah and what they thought were the causes for the problems - and some potential solutions,” said Dana, during an opening statement to Iraqi and Western media outlets.

The operation in Risalah dubbed Operation Relentless Hunt, lasted approximately three days, as Iraqi National Police and U.S. Army soldiers completed the search of the southern portion of Risalah and surrounding areas, said Danna.

During that time, Iraqi National Police detained 8 suspected terrorists and confiscated more than 60 illegal weapons during the door-to-door knock and enter operation.

Both officials praised the efforts of the Iraqi National Police, particularly the 8th and 6th Brigades of the 2nd NPD, who have been working with MND-B soldiers in neighborhoods throughout southern Baghdad.

“The easy part of the operation has been completed,” Danna continued, referring to ongoing security efforts in Risalah, during which Iraqi Security Forces and MND-B soldiers searched more than 2,800 homes and buildings.

“The more difficult period of the operation is the holding and the building phase, which is setting the conditions of confidence in the local residents so they can get on with life without the threat of terrorists committing violence in their neighborhood,” he said.

Since the conclusion of the search operation in Risalah, citizens once displaced because of violence brought on by terrorists and deaths squads are now beginning to return to their homes, said Al-Kaabi.

This operation, like many of the missions in support of Operation Together Forward, paved the way for improvements in essential services while simultaneously providing security for the Iraqi citizens living in the Rasheed District, he said.

Now that the neighborhood has been searched, the new focus will be helping the local residents improve their working and living conditions, continued Al-Kaabi. Plans for new water, sewage and electricity systems, and construction of new schools and hospitals, will be put into effect as the DAC convenes and finalizes plans with U.S. military engineers.

Al-Kaabi and Danna both said they are optimistic that the upward trends will continue as Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces continue to root out terrorists and death squads responsible for civil strife in southern Baghdad.

“I have great confidence in the long-term success of this operation because when we talk to the people in those neighborhoods, they do not accept nor condone the violence going on in their areas,” Danna said.

“I believe if we give them the chance and set the security conditions, we will achieve a larger lasting effect on the people in the surrounding areas,” he said.

During the three-day operation, MND-B soldiers and ISF seized 17 AK-47 assault rifles with 33 magazines of ammunition, 23 pistols, two SKS machineguns, five rocket-propelled grenade launchers with 18 RPG rounds, four grenades, 14 mortar rounds, five rockets and a large amount of bomb-making materials.

I can take Glen Beck in small doses. He's a good egg.

The best I've seen him is when he's a talking head on a particular subject, say on Chrissy's show. He really can debate very well.

But on his CNN show or his radio show there always seems to be a point where his humor goes beyond silly and reaches my last nerve.

U.S. detainee bill may be filibustered

UPI--White House ally and Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, R-Tenn., says he will filibuster a detainee rights bill some Republicans oppose softening.

The White House bill seeks to water down elements of the Geneva Conventions guidelines on interrogation techniques and culpability of intelligence officials, which is being challenged by three Republican senators -- John Warner, R-Va., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Frist threatened the filibuster, as "the Warner-McCain-Graham bill falls short" of preserving intelligence programs and protecting classified information from terrorists at closed military tribunals, The Washington Post said.

Frist conceded that a majority of the 100 senators back the rival group on military commissions but said there are not enough to block a filibuster, which requires a super-majority of 60.

Congress is scheduled to adjourn in nine days and the newest wrangling means there is a possibility Congress might not enact detainee legislation before the Nov. 7 midterm elections, the Post said.

Frist was on Sean Hannity Radio show yesterday and said "They (Democrats and RINOS) do not have the 60 votes". He did not come right out and say it but the threat is clear. IF the RINOS push their bill the Republicans will kill it. Thus the McCainiacs are in a lose-lose position. Either they cave to the WH or they get the blame for killing a bill almost every single Republican voter wants passed.

What you are seeing here is the pre spin by the Junk Media to cover up the fact the McCainiacs are in the process of caving. They will sieze on some completely meaniningless nothing in the bill to scream they "Won" but the fact is the bill will be the bill the President, not what 4 Stoodges, wanted.

I know the President does not work this way but I would kick the table over and go out every day and campaign on how they Old Boys club in DC is blocking anything getting done to make the American people safer. Reagan was a genius at making it "you and me against DC". Bush should take a page from his book, we could pick up a couple close Senate seats on it.

But the President is fighting a war and is more intrested in protecting Americans then playing politics. Too bad, we should be reaming the Do Nothings with this gaff.

That says a lot. Dems angry about a filibuster? Leahy just confirmed this is a good strategy by Bush/Frist.

I lived in Redding 7 years. If you love sportsmen activities...you can't beat Northern California. I hooked the largest rainbow trout of my life in the Sacramento River...I didn't have a scale that could handle that much weight...

Yes, I happened to hear Frist on Hannity's show yesterday too. McCain's vein has to be popping out of his traitorous neck since his disgraceful stunt has backfired on him. He'd be more popular if he were the skunk at the garden party.

I've never seen such DBM spinning. It really has been an eye opener to see their propaganda machines in high gear protecting these s.o.b.'s.

I, too, would love to see the President go on a "you and me against DC" tour. As soon as this election is over, I hope he will because the media will continue calling him a lame duck and try disrespecting him further.

Bush could get the last laugh if he gets the American people behind HIM. Congress will have to follow, even if it's begrudgingly.

A coup in Venezuela removed Chavez from office.

The plotters were afraid he'd be a martyr if they killed him so they let him come back to town.

The rest is history. He got control of the military and here we are!

Weakness begets failure.

Have we all forgotten the love affair the media had with Fidel?

He was wined and dined in Harlem with Sean's good friend Charlie Rangel.

He grew a backbone at the right moment for the world.
