Surprisingly, if you're a bit more patient with the morons and tease out some real answers, you'll discover that we "oppress the poor" almost entirely by buying stuff from them, providing them with jobs (at higher wages and with better working conditions than those otherwise created by their economies), and investing money on capital development in their countries, regions or neighborhoods.
Admittedly it's a strange meaning for "oppress," but that's what it turns out to be!
