Chinese-Americans cheer arrival of Chinese navy ships (September, 2006)

SAN DIEGO – More than 300 Chinese and Chinese-Americans cheered and waved the two nations' flags Monday morning on a pier at San Diego Naval Base, a noisy greeting for two Chinese navy ships making a rare visit to U.S. mainland port. Hundreds of Chinese sailors in white uniforms with blue neckerchiefs stood stiffly at the rails of the destroyer Qingdao and the auxiliary ship Hongzehu as they cruised into port.

It was only the second visit ever of People's Liberation Army vessels to San Diego, and the first since 1997.

Chinese-American dancers and drummers entertained before a pierside ceremony. Base commander Capt. D.R. Smith and Rear Adm. Wang Fushan, deputy commander of the Chinese North Sea Fleet, exchanged brief remarks.

“As soon as we arrived, we received a warm welcome,” Fushan said. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for your hospitality.”

Fushan invited visitors and the media aboard the Qingdao for a tour and photographs. The Chinese sailors smiled and posed for photos.

Chinese and U.S. armed forces began a series of tentative contacts in the late 1990s, but they ended abruptly in early 2001 after a Chinese fighter jet collided with a Navy EP-3 surveillance aircraft off China's coast. The Chinese pilot died, and the U.S. crew was held prisoner for 11 days after the EP-3 was forced to land on Hainan Island.

But since last year, Pacific forces commander Adm. William Fallon has stressed closer ties with the Chinese military, a move welcomed by local Chinese-Americans.

“I think the U.S. and the Chinese should know each other,” said Frank Liu, president of the 2,000-member San Diego Chinese Association. “I'm hoping the United States and China can have a better relationship.”

As Wang Fushan wished the crowd and Smith, "Interesting Times"...

Amazing at the reverse political correctness in this country. What if the British Navy visited and a group of Americans waived the British Flag to welcome them. Would they (those waiving the flag) be view with suspicion and accused of British Nationalism?

...and we were wrong to get the Japanese away from the West Coast during World War 2. Yep...sure we were...

depends, did we do a wholesale internment of all German and Italians on the East Coast, women, children and elderly?

Anyone know the ticker of a company specializing in Internment Camps....?

Next time a Russian vessel come visit an American port, let me know, maybe we can work together on it.

Another thing I can't understand --Chinese Americans RAN AWAY FROM CHINA...! They got rich HERE..!

They seem like the last people who should be welcoming Chinese warships.

Go back far enough and Americans ran away from Britain, and what would the response be if a British WAR SHIP came to visit? There would be the waiving of British flags as well as a sign of respect.

It was my close working relationship with many chinese that began me thinking about our lax immigration policies. Nearly to a person the ones I worked with were outwardly more loyal to PRC or ROC than to the US, even though they had their homes & families here.

In all fairness, I have Chinese in my family - citizens - who are among the most patriotic individuals I know. But in general we really need to start paying closer attention to who we are letting in.

We interred nearly as many Italians and Germans as Japanese.

It was the relocation from the west coast that affected Japanese exclusively.

Wow, I haven't seen this thread in a while :)

We interred nearly as many Italians and Germans as Japanese.

....hmmmm....that's the first time I've heard a claim like that. From what I've read in the past, internment of Italians and Germans numbered in the four, five, six thousand range. And mostly adult working age males. Not women, children and the elderly. And of course, the Japanese Americans, in the hundreds of thousands and included women, children and the elderly.

There were about 90,000 of german/italian heritage interned, vs. 110,000 of Japanese decent.

The 'relocation' affected many more, and according to what I read was a 'voluntary' policy, meaning anyone who had a place to go anywhere east of the Rockies was free to relocate there, while those who didn't had to go to one of the camps. Of course, most had no where else to go.

Not justifying what happened, but the situation was a little more complicated than most today realize.

I wonder sometimes, if your observation is partially tainted by an overarching paradigm in America towards a kinship towards Europe.

In my company, we have European and Japanese suppliers. And we buy more from Europe than we do from Japan. But I can tell you, that people grumble more about Japan. The labor unions even protest to corporate whenever additional work is sent to Japan. I'm not talking about the 50's or 60's or 70's or even the 80's. I'm talking about just a few years ago.

It's not so much the technical work force that are vocal but the labor unions. But even amongst the technical workforce, you can sense an angst about suppliers outside of Europe and more of a kinship towards suppliers in Europe.

Through the years, I've been in social settings or observed, where people from New Zealand, Australia, England, Germany, Italy, etc. speak about their home country with a patriotic zeal. It doesn't seem offensive to an American. It even draws further interests. But someone outside of the European setting (or descendants such as NZ and Australia) has to be more careful about how they speak about their home country (which, by the way, proves political correctness swings BOTH ways).

90,000 Italians and Germans behind barbed wire compound with round the clock armed guards. Honestly, I've never heard of it. Can you send me information about it?

Thanks.

I didn't intend to limit my comment to Chinese or asians, I've heard other of our 'guests' speak derogatorily about the US as well. I just happened to work more with asian immigrants.

IMO we need to look closer at ALL those who wish to immigrate here, and hold them to a higher std than we have been.

We have enough homegrown anti-American knuckleheads to deal with, we don't need to import any more.
