Relaxation of plane hand luggage restrictions delights musicians

Some restrictions on hand luggage on planes are to be relaxed next week after government talks with the airline operators. The changes are likely to mean bulky items, including musical instruments, will be allowed as carry-on baggage.

Orchestras complained that they were being badly affected by draconian rules that effectively prevented musicians taking large instruments on planes.

The Department for Transport has been working "to see if there are any practical steps that can be taken to lessen the burden while not compromising on security".

I'm certain all Syrian musicians traveling to Vegas this week are pleased. Footnote.

Well banning slimes would be a reallly hugh improvement!

No slimes=no 911.

No slimes= no Lockerbie

This is good news! Thanks for the ping.

I heard about the restrictions right after 9-11 on NPR. The host was interviewing someone about it and asked "A piccolo player wouldn't have a problem, right?" I almost drove off the road laughing. (Gene Tracy fans will know what I mean)

That doesn't just delight classical musicians, it lets all those folky singer songwriter types carry their small bodied guitars on board the plane as well.

My 1964, solid mahogany, Gibson-made Epiphone FT-30 (think Gibson LG-O), has expressed tremendous happiness that it will be able to travel again (no way would I check it).
