PHOENIX (Reuters) - U.S. border agents arrested a Marine deserter wanted for the last 40 years as he drove into California from Mexico, the Customs and Border Protection agency said on Friday.

Officers checking 63-year-old Victor Aguirre's car and papers at the busy San Ysidro border crossing near San Diego discovered there was a felony warrant issued by the Marines outstanding against him since 1966, during the Vietnam War.

Aguirre would likely be taken to Camp Pendleton, a Marine base north of San Diego, and be discharged without facing formal charges, the San Diego Union-Tribune quoted a Marine spokesman as saying.

The deserter driving up from Mexico could possibly be using an old identity - that of a deserter Aguirre from the VietNam era.

There must be thousands of lost identities out there for people to buy.

Perhaps this guy bought a bad one.

Carter's amnesty was for any violations of the Military Selective Service Act. I don't beleive deserters fall into this category.

Right, Carter only pardoned draft dodgers, not deserters.

"do you feel the same way about all the old NAZI's? Some of these guys are in their late '80's and 90's, but they are still hounded and prosecuted to this day...there is no repreive for these old guys?"

The Nazi's being hunted are suspected war crimminals, not typical run of the mill ex-Nazis who are fat/happy and retired pinching barmaid's bottoms in Bavaria and singing the praises of Viagra.

63 years old? Probably thought it was time for him to come back to get his social security checks started.

You've got to be feeling pretty stupid to actually get CAUGHT crossing the border from Mexico, when millions of ignorant mexican laborers managed to succeed in the attempt.

I realize what the NAZI's are...I think that they ought to be hounded and hunted until they are dead.

My point is that I think deserters from the American military are about as bad as nazis, should be hounded to infinity, and never be "let off the hook". There can never be any excuse for desertion....and time cannot take care of the problem. If this guy gets off, what will keep others from deserting their unit knowing that they will not have to pay a price only if they can avoid getting caught for long enough.

We know now that 40 years will definately get them home free.

The guy was dumb enough to cross at a Port of Entry instead of hiking across the desert.

If you attempt to cross at a Port of Entry with bad documents or if you have other issues you are very likely to get caught.

If you hike across the desert, the odds are very good that you won't.

I'm 55, but I don't see what my age has to do with what's right.
