The heritage of the West is anchored in reason and in the reification of our religious thought through that prism. Its made us stronger, refined and more aware of how to apply faith to the problems of the real world. The Pope's consequential lecture delivered in Regensburg was very much in that tradition. For unreasonable people on the Left and for the Islamofascists, reasonable faith presents a challenge to them. That is why they sought to shut the Pope down. We will have to repeatedly revisit the issue because of the consequences it presents for our age.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." -Manuel II Paleologus

a Somali clerk demanding Islamists "hunt down and kill" the Pontiff.

A clerk?

Actually other stories indicate it was a "cleric", IOW, yet another Insane Imam or Mad Mullah.

One thing about the reports on the Pope's speech today - well, yesterday now - has driven me crazy. Repeatedly, it has been said that the Pope was "very sorry" for the reaction to his speech. I watched him speak live on CNN International, and I taped it. I've played the tape back several times and he NEVER said he was sorry. He said he was "very shocked" by the reaction.
He did say he regrets the reaction, but that is not the same as saying he is sorry.

This is incorrect reporting by the media.

And though I seriously doubt they'll ever state it, the Muslims reaction just proves the Emporer's quote to be correct. People aren't as stupid as the news media wishes they'd be and can see this for themselves.

"This is a very important clarification that we had been seeking. Had this caveat been included in the Pope's original speech it may have prevented this controversy in the first place."

Pheeeww! It's so easy! All we have to do is make sure we "clarify" our free speech statements, otherwise "controversy" will follow.....controversy such as killing people and torching churches. Man this sucks. Has anyone noticed yet how closely this blackmailing business resembles an Austin Powers/Goldfinger movie!? For they truly are blackmailing us.

Words can heal. Benedict's were a proclamation that unreasonable people will not keep him from exercising his own capacity for reason.

The fact that the New York Times, and much of the West, don't share the same determination is much more dangerous anything Benedict said.

True. Have any American politicians commented on this? If they have, I missed it.

Iran has announced it has built a time machine for the purpose of going back to kill the infidel Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus who insulted Mohammed.

Built in two days, thanks to inspiration from Allah, the device has 26,000 parts.
