Your analysis reminds me of a sci-fi book I read years ago titled Legacy of Heorot by Niven and Pournelle. The main point of the story is that there is never a paradise - someone must always man the wall against predators. And those individuals brave enough to man the wall constantly serve as a reminder to those who do not how weak and ineffective they are. Also goes back to when Spiderman was introduced. Jameson constantly tears away at Spidy basically because Spidy has the courage to face the evils that make Jameson cower. Considering what has happened with the Pope this past week, by this time next year the Vatican will come out and say this is all Bush's fault.
