The only reason she said what she said is to try to fool the downstaters into thinking she's pro-gun. She isn't. She never has been and she never will be.

It isn't about the Illinois race; it is about the Brady's jumping in to make some more headlines for the anti-gun crowd. Whether or not Topinka is pro-gun, the statements she made were. Handgun Control, Inc. is using whatever opening they can find to get into the news. The important part is that they are once again trotting out the "assault weapon" ban. This time on a state level.
I won't personally be voting for her, since I'm in Texas--but it so galling to have to choose whichever candidate we think is lying the least!
