That's one plausible theorey, but the McCain strategy is actually more sinister.
He is fomenting the division on the WOT deliberately, knowing that he is so despised by much of the Republican and conservative base that his only chance of winning the nomination in '08 is if the GOP loses both houses of Congress this fall. That way, he can ride to the rescue as our "savior" as the only Republican to hold the White House.
The man disgusts me. We were making substantial headway in the polls, and now there is this miserable division in the GOP ranks, and this will stall our momentum immediately. We'll see it in the polls this week, notwithstanding gas prices continuing to fall.
