Clooney, Nobel winner demand Darfur action

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel and actor George Clooney on Thursday urged the international community to help end the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region.

"The situation in Darfur is not getting better, it is getting worse," Clooney said in a statement. "We need the international community to commit all of its resources to bring an end to this extraordinary suffering. The critical hour for Darfur is now."

Wiesel and Clooney are scheduled to address U.N. Security Council members at an informal briefing on Thursday afternoon. The briefing has been organized by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, which recently set up a Darfur Commission of Nobel Laureates, and is being hosted by U.S. Ambassador John Bolton.

Sudan is resisting attempts by the U.N. to take over an African Union peacekeeping force that has been unable to stop the violence in the western Darfur region.

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has said the change would violate the country's sovereignty and has warned that his army would fight any U.N. forces sent to Darfur.

Wiesel called on Bashir to "stop obstructing international efforts to help the victims in Darfur."

"There is no choice but to act in defense of defenseless people. Those who commit genocide must not be allowed to hide behind national borders and claims of sovereignty," the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor said in a statement Thursday.

Will the MSM delight in counting the war dead if we send troops in? How quickly will Clooney start with the "America isn't the world's policeman" bull?

These people are sickening.

Ya know, your damned right about that!

Why be upset, the UN is a disgrace and a joke anyway.

The one thing the UN has accomplished however, is that it has managed to inflate the ego's of all of these stars and convince them that maybe, just maybe that they may have an IQ after all. That my friend is a very dangerous thing!

Clooney is right on this, but then again, you know what they say about broken clocks?

I agree that he is right this time, Darfur is an ugly situation that needs attention. It would be nice to see someone else besides the U.S. in the international community take the lead on doing something. Maybe some South American countries could start spreading some good will around the globe.

Sorry about that I was dreaming again. All the usual suspects, U.S., U.K., Australians, et al, will have to get involved to stop the problem. And of course they will be accused of all sorts of war crimes and the rest of the world will hammer us for it. yada yada yada...

You got that right. We should hang our head in shame. This is something we could easily do something about. Arms and a little air cover would go a long way.

She keeps company with a left wing whacko like Klooney. That is enough to raise a red flag with me.

To my understanding he has been to the area many times over the past few years to help document the situation. I dont always agree with the man but what he has done in this situation has been nothing short of admirable.

Elie Wiesel is not a "she" but is a he, and is a rather well-respected individual by people on both sides of the aisle because he is really not political, but a voice against genocide and inhumane treatment. read some of his books - you might be enlightened.
