The victor of the war on terror is far from clear, the historian Bernard Lewis told a Hudson Institute conference.
The British-born professor of Near Eastern studies at Princeton said Monday that he was "more optimistic about the future of our struggle" in the early 1940s when the French had capitulated to the Germans, when Stalin was Hitler's ally, and when America was still neutral than he is today.
"Hitler would have won under these conditions," Mr. Lewis said, citing America's inability to clearly define the war on terror and exactly who its enemy is. The professor, whose vision of the future of the Middle East and knowledge of Islam has guided President Bush's foreign policy, also cited as challenges the multilateralism that hamstrings America's ability to fight the war and the strong political opposition to policies designed to defeat the enemy, such as detaining terrorists without trial.

Uncle Sam is mild, as peaceful as a child,Carson Robison (in reference to the Pearl Harbor attack), 1942
But don't you get him riled, or you will rue it.
So now, they want to fight. Well, they've bit off quite a bite,
And Uncle Sam is going to make them chew it.
"Oil for food" was not an exception but the exemplar of how our allies' help us 'fight'. Our few true allies are the exception.
Are you aware of your MTV fleeting-mind/time-span deficiency?
You're off by a little:
295 million Americans divided into 3,000 dead is 0.001 percent. If you assume each person had 5 close family members (siblings, parents, children, spouse, aunts, uncles, and so forth) the percentage affected rises to 0.0051 percent, which is about 50 times the 0.0001 percent you mentioned.
But I agree that if we truly are to unite behind a struggle as a society, we have to have everyone affected by it, similar to WWII.
No, but I am aware that I spoke too soon. See post #21
But many Patriots have gun cabinets in THEIR corner...
If the islamists dare start their jihad on these shores..all PC bets, and gloves - are OFF!
We have two options. Fight to win or lose.
It's sad that today fighting to win is either illegal, against the Geneva Convention, against EU's standards, against U.S. law, against, against, against, against.
The only thing that might turn this mentality around is another massive hit on U.S. soil when thousands more die.
Even then the wrath might be directed at whoever is in power at the time of the hit instead of directed at the enemy. I see more investigations, commissions and blue ribbon panels ahead.
Oh, fry me a liver. I learned all I needed to know from the first line. A Brit git, with a worthless degree at Princeton!
Unless, of course, there happens to be a Democrat in the Whitehouse.
But, but, but...haven't they said that we should be above this? /sarc off
Rome vs. Carthage was also a clash of civilizations.
It took a Hannibal to wake up the Romans.
BUMP
Lefty's wet dream.
True...but when the islamofascists start electing moslems to school boards, establishing "prayer rooms", and mandatory "sensitivity education" about Islam, who are you going to shoot? When they pressure craven politicians to pass laws making offensive remarks about Allah a hate crime, who will you assassinate? What good did guns do when the NYT went supine and spread her legs rather than publish cartoons about mohammed?
If we lose the real battle(NOT the "wot"), we will go down, not with a bang but a whimper.
The real problem is that we wouldn't win WWII today.
Can you just imagine the congressional investigations and the outrage, the commissions and charges then using today's political climate? I'm convinced that the only thing that MIGHT wake us up is another massive hit on U.S. soil and even then there will be those who will blame the fact that we're fighting back as the reason for it.
And what's more sad is that populations in the majority of western nations actually blame us for the state of the world now. We just can't win unless populations are shocked into reality of what's happening.
If they do us further major damage, THEN you will see our fury unleashed, Just ask the Japanese and the Germans.
I think a hit has to happen in order to shock us into reality. I can't believe the denial that there is a serious problem that has to be faced.
I care. Mr. Lewis makes sense if you bother to read the article.
Another thing: history is about the past and is very weak on seeing the future.
"The question is when they will give up."
They won't ever give up. They must be eliminated. There are no other options that aren't temporary. And, we won't eliminate them until our pain is so severe that we have to fight back seriously or die.
There are plenty of us who will know who to shoot and when. When the time comes, we'll know it.
I heard something on FoxNews this am about some fellow running for the senate and if elected, would be the first muslim..I was on my way out the door, so I did not catch who or where, but I thought..here we go.
I WILL NOT live under a fascists, islamic government. Neither will thousands of others..there will be a fight BIG TIME. They can pass as many mooselime laws as they want..we'll just pass the ammo.
Sure RW, history is not a massive study to try to exptrapolate with a computer model on Big Blue. It is, as in our individual lives, the experience that we gain, to understand that principles and dynamics of "sowing and reaping" really do exist, so we may gain the wisdom of handling ourselves in our present and future.
