This is an edited transcript of an interview conducted by Ian Masters with Vincent Cannistaro [sic], the former CIA head of counterterrorism operations and intelligence director at the National Security Council under Ronald Reagan, which aired on the Los Angeles public radio KPFK on April 3, 2005:

Cannistraro: Well, in this case, the Germans had told the CIA’s head of the European desk on the operations side, Tyler Drumheller, who I spoke to, but he wasn’t comfortable going on the radio.

Found another interesting tidbit about the VIPS at Stratasphere link:

I never noticed this March 2003 article before which claims that it was the VIPS who leaked the Niger forgeries to the IAEA (from the VIPS link below).
The leak to IAEA came from a 25-member group of former CIA analysts and agents who call themselves the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS). One could probably think of a better name for their group, but maybe after working for the CIA the name is a description of the effect of working for the CIA. After 27 years of service, former CIA agent Ray McGovern comments on the documents, “It’s been cooked to a recipe, and the recipe is high policy.” He went on to say, “It goes against the whole ethic of secrecy and going through channels, and going to the (inspector general).

Pinging the usual research crew to see if they have anything to add.

If you go to http://intelligence.senate.gov/"http://intelligence.senate.gov, open the pdf file titled "Postwar Findings about Iraq's WMD Programs and Links to Terrorism and How they Compare with Prewar Assessments", and skip down to pdf pages 143-147, there are some details on conflict between what Drumheller and Tenet told the SSCI. I don't remember if Drumheller is mentioned by name--think he's described as the "CIA Europe chief" or something like that--but it seems to be referring to him.

Regarding the quote identifying VIPS as the source of the leak to IAEA about the Niger forgeries, I tried to substantiate that quote (originally posted on May 17, 2003 by IslamOnline's Hwaa Irfan at http://www.islamonline.net/English/In_Depth/Iraq/2003/03/article05.SHTML) when I was putting together my "Wilsongate" post (where I considered a similar scenario in the "Means" section in Post #2 under "Phase 2: Planting the forgery" and in the "Opportunity" section in Post #3 under "4. Wilson’s alibi(s)"). My recollection is that I did not include that quote because I was unable to determine the source of the information (it seemed like it may have been an inference from previously-published articles rather than based on a direct quotation of a source with firsthand knowledge) or find other corroborating details. I do suspect VIPS (possibly in conjunction with CIA personnel in Europe) was involved in the leak but I wouldn't rest the case on that quote.
