A bipartisan group of Michigan lawmakers wants all sixth-grade girls to be vaccinated against cervical cancer.
A Republican state senator who is the lead sponsor said it's the first legislation of its kind in the U.S.
The vaccine was approved by federal regulators this summer and hailed as a breakthrough in cancer prevention. The shots prevent infections from strains of a sexually transmitted virus -- human papilloma virus, or HPV -- that can cause cervical cancer and genital warts.
At the time, conservatives expressed concern that schools would require the vaccine for enrollment. They argue that such mandates infringe on parents' rights and send a message that underage sex is OK.
If approved, the measure would go into effect for the next school year.
The vaccine was approved for females between ages 9 and 26. In studies, it was credited with preventing disease from the two types of HPV that are responsible for approximately 70 percent of all cervical cancers, according to Detroit television station WDIV.
The legislator who proposed the requirement noted that, as with all other school-required vaccines, parents may opt out of this requirement for medical, religious or philosophical reasons.

Why in the world would the vaccine make them sterile?

I can understand that, but that was definitely not the focus of the post I was responding to. That post was entirely concerned with whether the daughter would have Regulation, Approved Sex on the Wedding Night, or not.

Fortunately post 50 was sarcasm, but it was based off of real sentiment. :-P

And post #34, to which I was specifically responding in mine.

WHO KNOWS? There haven't been any long-term studies to determine that!
Did anyone think there might b a link between the Pill and certain types of breast cancer? Nope -- but the link is there, and it stinks for those who suffer now.
I'm just concerned at the lack of data.

You are correct - I just looked it up.
Thank you for the clarification.
But I still think that doctors and hospitals (read government masters) should NEVER force medication that can prove fatal (even if rarely) on infants without parental notification or consent.

I'm not sure why people associate cervical cancer to sexual promiscuity. I have endometriosis, which is not STD, and it's a precursor to cervical cancer. It's a disease that many young women don't even know they have. I didn't find out that I had it until I was 52 years old. I had a hysterectomy at 57 to eliminate the annual fear of having my pap test come back irregular and then on to biopsy.
Saying you won't inoculate your daughter because it's opening the door to promiscuity is a cop out. Sexual morals are established by the family, and regardless of how conservative your values may be they sometimes can't overcome the rage of young adult hormones.
As a side note, promiscuity is not limited to a certain age group. gender or political leanings. You may be protecting your daughter against STD the first night of her honeymoon.

What is the logic of rejecting a treatment that prevent CANCER? Because FR's Old Testament Retributionists think a girl who actually has sex without a permission slip is a "slut" and a "whore" and deserves to die, anyway.
Unless there is a legitimate question about the safety of the vaccine, this should be a no-brainer.

There is a rational reason for thinking that hormonal birth control might have a link to some types of cancer, because it messes with hormones, breast tissue responds to hormones, and many breast cancers are also hormone responsive (fortunately the risk is very low and may be lower still with modern low-dosage pills, there haven't been enough new studies to determine this). There is no rational reason for thinking this vaccine might cause sterility. One might equally validly suppose it might cause all of your teeth to fall out or make your toes grow half an inch.
