A bipartisan group of Michigan lawmakers wants all sixth-grade girls to be vaccinated against cervical cancer.
A Republican state senator who is the lead sponsor said it's the first legislation of its kind in the U.S.
The vaccine was approved by federal regulators this summer and hailed as a breakthrough in cancer prevention. The shots prevent infections from strains of a sexually transmitted virus -- human papilloma virus, or HPV -- that can cause cervical cancer and genital warts.
At the time, conservatives expressed concern that schools would require the vaccine for enrollment. They argue that such mandates infringe on parents' rights and send a message that underage sex is OK.
If approved, the measure would go into effect for the next school year.
The vaccine was approved for females between ages 9 and 26. In studies, it was credited with preventing disease from the two types of HPV that are responsible for approximately 70 percent of all cervical cancers, according to Detroit television station WDIV.
The legislator who proposed the requirement noted that, as with all other school-required vaccines, parents may opt out of this requirement for medical, religious or philosophical reasons.
I'll not stoop to your level, thank you.
False. There are myriad avenues of transmission other than sexual intercourse.
He gave her truth and love, which are not different. He did not say "You go, girl! Keep on going!" He loved her (and anyone) despite their (our) flaws, sins, cruelty, lusts, avarice, etc. He doesn't love the dirt.
spatso- so if all our sexual desires are a gift from God, what about necrophiles? Pedophiles? Ebophiles? Serial adulterers?
Your argument has no foundation in any scripture of the world or common sense. Every religion gives us basically the same guidelines about sex. The problem is that people want to worship their sexual organs instead of God.
Excellent comments.
There are obviously two camps on this thread.
1. The side who posits what you just stated - sexual morality (which is universal in every religion in the world) is God given, and actually for our own good and happiness, both individually and as a society.
2. Those whose basic philosophy is "if it feels good, do it" and "we're all animals anyway so let's act like animals".
I was in college when I lost my virginity. I wish I had saved myself for my husband whom I met a year later. I know there is temptation out there, but all I can do is teach my daughter our values and expect that she will remain close to her professed faith. I monitor my children's activities and friends very closely ( that's how I kept my virginity as long as I did...my parents had me under house arrest...) But I WILL be a mother-in-law before I am a grandmother. That is my expectation and I have no doubt it will be met.

You're doing better than fine. How many parents today have invested in the moral development of their children? Not nearly enough, it seems.
Somehow I get the feeling you misunderstood my post.
I am pro-life btw.
You're wise to emphasize communicating values rather than going for "house arrest" which can lead to rebellion at the earliest possible opportunity. :)
Yes, as I said up the thread, Jesus loves everyone whether they are so-called "good" or so-called "bad". He also tells us (if we want to be pleasing to God and have an eternal relationship with Him) to give up our own selfish will and voluntarily do what God wants us to do.
Illicit sex - aka sex outside of marriage - is soundly condemned by God in ever religion.
Obviously such instructions are in the realm of: If you can't do the best thing, A, at least do the next best, B.
It's not at all the same as "screw anything that moves as soon as you're physically capable of it, it's all God's gift, guilt-free sex is what God wants for you" etc etc. Which is basically what you are saying.
Okay, if you think my summary of your viewpoint is not accurate, say it in your own words.
Too many people have a misunderstanding of vaccinations and the immune system and the damage they can and do cause.
If someone wants to take the vaccine, then do it with an understanding of the potential damage it can do to your immune system and this is where I take exception to the government making these vaccines mandatory. They are taking too many parental choices away by making vaccines mandatory, forcing kids who are being normal kids onto ADHD drugs, etc.
"Okay, if you think my summary of your viewpoint is not accurate, say it in your own words."
The following is a summary that I posted earlier.
It would be important for me to stress to young people that to be made in the likeness and image of God means God made you exactly the way that God intended for you to be. And, that includes all your moving parts and emotional reactions such as erections, orgasmic response or our sense of desire or attraction. So, our sexuality is gifted to us by our Creator and not to appreciate the profound sexual nature of our being and character means to criticize the Creators creation.
On the other hand, I do understand that sexuality is a highly complex matter. Kids who are lucky enough to have caring and nurturing parents tend to grow up with healthy self esteem. From that base of simply knowing that they are loved they are able to make healthy choices in relationships and sexuality. But many kids grow up without being esteemed or nurtured by their families. Indeed some are beaten, betrayed and exploited by the very families that are responsible for their care.
These kids tend to escape their families by jumping into a cycle of destructive and abusive relationship patterns. And, it is not unusual that these kids would exercise poor judgment in the name of a love they have probably never really experienced. So, when we condemn these kids or call for God's judgment on the grounds of moral righteousness we are, in fact, trivializing the mystery of our Creator's work.
One last thought, it is easy to blame the parents of those kids if they make poor choices in terms of sexuality and relationships. But in many instances the parents were never esteemed, loved or nurtured by their parents. How are they able to give a child what they do not have for themselves? Simply, we are called by the Lord to love these kids.
"It would be important for me to stress to young people that to be made in the likeness and image of God means God made you exactly the way that God intended for you to be. And, that includes all your moving parts and emotional reactions such as erections, orgasmic response or our sense of desire or attraction."
So what about people whose sexual attraction includes members of the same sex, underage youths or children, people not their wives or husbands? Or animals? Or dead people? Or dead animals? Or pornographic images? Or using force? S&M? These are all gifts of God?
How on earth do you think I am trivializing anything? There is a huge push by moral relativists [sic] of various stripes promoting homosexual sex as normal and natural, lowering the age of consent, academics and psychologists promoting "inter-generational" sex, etc. This is not trivial. My question was legitimate, and you didn't answer it.
