QUOTE: From Tony Snow's press briefing today in response to a question from a "reporter".
... ask yourself, is it arrogance or is it maintaining fidelity to principle; is it being stubborn or is it being steadfast? You've got a President whose principle is the same. And April, neither you, nor I, or anybody else in this room will ever go through what the President had to do after September 11th, which is to know that Americans died, and that as President everybody is going to be looking at how you handle it and how you step up to the plate. The President has been absolutely steadfast from the beginning, ["]I'm not going to let them win["].
But the idea that some say, "he was being arrogant," you cannot be arrogant when you're looking into the face of mothers, as he was saying last night, holding children who are never going to know their father. You can't be arrogant in a situation like that. There is nothing more humbling than being the President in a time of war. And you can ask any President who did it. And George W. Bush is no different than his predecessors, Democratic or Republican, who lies awake nights asking himself the question, how can I get this done and get our people home?
It is the natural inclination -- you've seen how the President reacts and responds when he gets before the military. He gets choked up because he knows how tough it is. He knows what the atmosphere sometimes is politically. He knows that these people are committed to it. You've got an all-volunteer army; first war in which we've had an all-volunteer army because people are committed. And he wants to make sure that he can get as many of them -- he would love to get each and every one of them home safe. It is simply not possible [I would have to add, for THIS president] to be arrogant as a Commander-in-Chief in a time of war.

I LOVE THIS ONE! Everyone tries to pay!
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay reaches for his wallet as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice prepares to pay at a Tim Horton's coffee shop in Pictou, Nova Scotia. The beverages were on the house.

Yay Nancy! I was thinking of you
especially hard while preparing to post this because of Tony Snow's reference to our president and the military. Glad you got first today.

I must say it is VERY NICE to have our government and the Canadian government on such amiable terms after such a long chill.
This is a type of global warming I can take a shine to.

I like the way Condi dressed to fit in with the people she was visiting: "Rice poses for a photo with three girls dressed as highland dancers while on a visit to the Museum of Industry in Stellarton, Nova Scotia."

These two seem to be in much harmony.

If I can get to it, I'll see if I can dig up a copy of Condi's remarks to the Canadians. Or someone else could beat me to it and I wouldn't complain about being beaten.

Rice arrives in the Roosevelt Room for a remembrance ceremony at the State Department in Washington, on the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the US.

Rice, seen here on 11 September 2006, warned that the international community must learn from past experience and not abandon Afghanistan as it struggles to build a stable democracy.
