Well there is no eutopian conservative candidate out there but I will point out you can judge a man by the associations he has. If Kinky Friedman has that idiot Willie Nelson campaigning for him you can be pretty astute and ascertain Kinky is damaged goods. I just cannot trust what the man says...and... Birds of a feather flock together.

The ultimate disgrace would be having Chris Bell slipping in by Kinky siphoning off conservative votes and then we are really screwed..

Perry is no prize by no means but overall is best for Texas and gets my vote despite his RINO tendencies.

"I think I'm old enough to recognize that East Texas was always depressed economically compared to the rest of the state."

A) I did not know Houston was depressed economically

B) what does that have to do with the fact that illegals are surging nothward like fireants and nobody is doing one single thing about it. Again, if you think you are immune, I will get back with you in 5 yrs. We'll talk then and see if you have a different opinion.

You present a good, & reasoned argument.....as opposed to ridicule, slam, & insult.

I do respect that.

I am about to quote you on another thread of this same subject.

The power to put items such as gay marriage and abortion on the agendas of the Texas House and Senate belongs to the Speaker of the House and the Lieutenant Governor. The governor does not have that power.

Uh kitty, the TX governor, does have the power to sign those bills.

But what the hey go an your little self-absorbed mindtrip folly.

After Perry signed into law the biggest tax increase in the state's history it is time to take away that pen for good.

"Then the very conservative legislature would have to pass them before the figure-head governor signs it."

I appreciated your lesson.

Question, If the "firgure head" governors signature is required that would imo make him important.

Or, is it not required. I really dont know, just asking. No gov signature equals no bill right?

When Texans refer to "East Texas", they aren't referring to Houston.

Ask Mr. Friedman what he thinks about drug legalization. If you ever read his commentaries in Texas Monthly you might get insight into his leanings. I think he and Molly Ivins would be great friends but they ain't no conservatives. He has that common sense sounding "cowboy schtick" down fairly well but I think there is no there underneath. If there is, we wouldn't like what is there.

Why are people worried about the crazy stuff like drug legalization? There will be no such bills coming out of the legislature.

We should worry about tax increases. Such bills have made it out of the legislature. In fact, Gov. Perry signed the largest tax increase in history. It even included a stealth income tax. I trust Kinky to veto such bills in the future.

The voice of experience and been there, done that. All these "life-long conservatives" gullibles who have no shame should take a lesson from you - who has been there.

We are not big Perry fans but will get out and vote for him just to keep Kinky and Grandma outta there.

Okay...I see that I have to go through this more slowly for you.
The governor has no power to bring up any changes to Texas law because he cannot place items on the legislative calendars of the House and Senate. Only the Speaker and Lieutenant Gov. can do that, and they are both conservative Republicans. They would not place such issues on the calendar, knowing that the conservative majorities in both bodies do not favor them. And yes, I am aware that after the legislature passes a bill, the governor can sign it or veto it, but vetos are rather rare in Texas.

They should also ask Kinky about the effect of his views on the death penalty.

Specifically, they should ask Kinky if he understands that, if he commutes the death sentences for the inmates on death row, it will not mean an automatic life without parole sentence.

In fact, due to Texas' lenient parole laws in the late 1980s and early 1990s when a number of these death row inmates committed their murders, many would be immediately eligible for release on parole.

The best candidate running? You have to be kidding. Kinky is a spoiler and a joke. Read Texas Monthly to hear his wisdom and if you agree, you are no conservative either. But you are easily hoodwinked.

I live in downtown Houston close to Montrose that is infested and infected with lots of Liberals. I notice that LOTS of these Liberals support Kinky Friedman due to his views on drugs, gambling, abortion etc.

With that fact and that Willie Nelson supports him can he really be that good for Texas or is he just saying a lot of conservative catch phrases to ensnare angry conservatives?

I admire and respect conservatives that are concerned about real conservative issues but am afraid they are gulping at bait cast on the water. Remember a person tells you what they want you to hear to get what they really want to get

Any thoughts Freepers?

I can just hear Kinky while chomping on that big ole cigar with his cowboy dude looking hat, "Hell, there ain't nothing wrong with a little weed (or a lot), just ask my main man Willy! Another thing, ain't nobody telling the wimmen of Texas they don't have control over their own bodies. And if'n I want to hike the nature trails on yor property, I will because it was free range before you white folk came and stole it from our native brothers."

Kinky......old hippy dressed up in (his impression) of a Texas cowboy.

I do realize there is a lot of anger from teachers against Perry. The unions have made sure to whip up that constituent. I guess we will get what we deserve. Whoever said Kinky was Ann Richards II may be right on but I think maybe even worse for the standards in our state.

".......or is he just saying a lot of conservative catch phrases to ensnare angry conservatives?"

Very possible. But I don't like Perry's catch phrase, "I ain't gonna do anyting about the boarder because that's the feds job."

I'm not saying I am voting for Kinky (I will not probably), but I can see why many folks are willing to roll the dice.

I agree with you and can see the reasons for the discontent its not exactly an all star lineup!

I might vote for Kinky simply because he won't be able to get anything done since the Republicans and Democrats won't work with him. This might actually be a good thing.

Bingo!! And it is only for Texas Governor. Not like there is any real power as in other states. If you are ever going to cast a symbolic vote, this is the best opportunity.
