That looks like a high altitude contrail being illuminated by the setting sun. Bingo. We have a winner. The news media sre now reporting that it was indeed a high-flying aircraft leaving a contrail and was at just the right angle to look like a flaming object leaving a trail of smoke. Mystery solved.

That looks like a high altitude contrail being illuminated by the setting sun. That is exactly what is in the photo. In the 'turn' end, you can even see dual contrails from separate engine exhausts...

That looks like a high altitude contrail being illuminated by the setting sun. sounds great... right up until you see it make the turn. The distance in which the turn was made was very short. The g-forces would be insane.
