President Bush talks with Mrs. Arlene Howard after she presented a police badge found on the body of her son, Port Authority Police officer George Howard. The President and First Lady spent hours comforting family members of victims in the World Trade Center attacks.
The President holds the badge.
"And I will carry this," said President Bush during his address to Congress Sept. 20. "It is the police shield of a man named George Howard, who died at the World Trade Center trying to save others. It was given to me by his mom, Arlene, as a proud memorial to her son. This is my reminder of lives that ended, and a task that does not end."

Although this event took place in October, no retrospective of that period would be complete without remembering the President's brave appearance at Yankee Stadium during the 2001 World Series. All alone atop the pitcher's mound, he pitched a perfect strike while wearing a bulletproof vest.
