The only thing I can think of is either they're not a smart as they're supposed to be OR the movie is so damaging they had no choice but to try and stop it from being aired unedited.

Yea, remember how that would happen during the Clinton era?? I do... Something so damaging would come out, the War Room spin doctors were sent out in force and then it would be something so trivial that it just went away.
