"My question is WHY did ABC/Disney tell the truth?"
i think even media elites and officers in media corps (including Disney) viewed the clinton handling of this as incompetent at best, and most likely some of the people green-lighting this lost associates or friends, or personally knows someone who did, in the WTC.
I think I know how things work in that world enough to assume that first and foremost they looked at this as a great and compelling story that would garner interest, and perhaps controversy, which would increase the interest. These things start with a pitch - a producer approaches the network with an angle on a story, (if it's a true story) and it goes from there. This being the 5 year anniversary, I am sure ABC wanted to do something "significant" (and that's a business as well as a philosophical decision) and perhaps in the end the facts speak for themselves, and "truth will out" - as they saying goes. The 9-11 Commission report I am sure, looked like a great jumping off point or hook from which to tell this story.

This is MY take on WHY ABC decided to tell the truth. I honestly don't think ABC decided to tell the truth. Rush's friend, the writer, decided to tell the truth as did the director I assume. I do believe they tried to stick to the findings of the 9/11 commission.
However, ABC just assumed (as it always does) that the final result would put Bush in a bad light and exonerate Clinton. Do they ever produce anything else? I don't believe Iger had his eye on the ball (kept up with the script or project), and now he has to deal with this 40 million dollar monster and the Clinton mafia.
This is their 9/11 presentation. A lot of it seems to be based on ABC journalist John Miller's reports. He should know, he was there in Afghanistan. Just by viewing the trailers it appears that a very large portion of the film is very damning to Clinton & co. I sure hope ABC has the guts to show it as is. From what I've seen on the clips, it appears to be historically accurate.
