GM Revs Up Its '07 Vehicle Warranty(100K/5YR)
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 7, 2006 | John O'Dell

General Motors Corp. announced Wednesday that it would improve the warranty on its 2007 model year cars and trucks, hoping to stop car buyers from migrating to Asian automakers.

GM extended its warranty to five years or 100,000 miles, substantially enhancing the three-year, 36,000-mile coverage the company had offered on engines, transmissions and other powertrain parts.

The plan, unveiled Wednesday by Chief Executive Rick Wagoner, is part of GM's effort to stop being seen as a carmaker that depends on cash incentives and cheap interest rates to sell cars and trucks. The Detroit-based automaker has been losing market share to Asian rivals for more than a decade; its U.S. market share is at an 80-year low.

One analyst said the move was risky if GM failed to keep improving the quality of its vehicles. Increased repair bills and negative public perception would result if the company launches vehicles that cannot keep pace with rivals, said Chance Parker, head of product research for Westlake Village-based J.D. Power & Associates.

If I wasn't such a Honda fan, I would buy the Impala SS. I rented the Impala and must say that it had loads of room, great pick-up, and pretty good gas mileage

I will be looking into the hybrid Tahoe. Probably wait out the first year so they can work the bugs out of it if any show up. Going to go for the 4WD version.

I'd still rather have a Honda with a 36,000 mile warrenty than a GM with a 100,000 mile warrenty.

I pretty much know cars just by looking at them, but I saw this car in a parking lot and it was so interesting looking, I went up to it and was shocked to see it was a Buick Lucerne. I have to say I've always been prejudiced against Buicks.

Folks just think GM's pension plan is expensive. Wait until the chickens come home to roost from this!

How are Fords coming along these days? Any improvements in how they stand up?
My first car was a Ford. And my second, come to think of it.
Oh those long summer nights in a Ford.

This is a smart move by GM. It demonstrates that the company has enough confidence in its vehicles to cover long-term drivetrain repairs. GM also extended this policy to customers who had already bought 2007 vehicles.

If you go to J.D. Power's web site www.jdpower.com and click on the corporate Website (upper right corner), you'll discover that the difference in quality between the "Big Three" and Asian cars isn't as great as the perception.

I agree about Honda. They might not make the most exciting car in the world but they do put together a great car with out most of the options you want in a car. Keep a look out for their Diesel entries in the next few years and the new Accord for the 2008 model year (next September). Another nice car that you can get for a fraction of the competitors is the Hyundai Sonata.

A few months ago, Ford introduced a 5-year/60,000 drivetrain warranty, which GM just trumped.

Basically, Ford has reduced its quality problems, but sales are hurting. Truck sales are down and not many people like the styling of Ford cars.

They will probably be out of business in five years, so you had better go for the 100,000 miles fast.

Longer warranties sound good, but who pays for them? If GM increases sales and profits enough to outweigh the increased costs of the warranties, then it will be a wise decision. But if sales don't increase, this could be another disaster for American automakers.

I'd still rather have a Honda with a 36,000 mile warrenty than a GM with a 100,000 mile warrenty.

However, Honda does not make Corvettes. :-)

I have owned and driven:

Pantera
Maserati
ferrari
RX7
Roadrunner
TransAm
etc.

The Corvette beats em all in "fun factor". BTW, the Ferrari was still my best "WOW" car. Even when I pulled in for gas, total strangers would come over and just ask if they could get a pic standing next to it.

However, often I see people using thier camera phones to take pictures of the Vette as I drive down the freeway. :-)
