I was under the impression that it was chemically different and closer to the sun.

About the only thing the sun and venus have in common is that they're hotter than earth. Venus is a rocky planet, about the size of our own, only with thick clouds that keep the heat in, warming the surface to 900 degrees. The sun is a thermonuclear cloud of plasma, hydrogen and helium.
