Facing a federal investigation just two months before his election, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez offered a fiery defense of his honor yesterday and accused the U.S. Attorney of engaging in an "orchestrated" smear campaign to destroy him.
The Democratic senator at tacked the timing of a subpoena is sued by federal investigators seek ing documents related to a rental deal Menendez had with a nonprofit agency in Hudson County from 1994 to 2003. The subpoena was delivered to the North Hudson Community Action Corp. earlier this week, sources familiar with the move told The Star-Ledger Thursday night.
During a defiant speech to fellow Democrats during the party's annual conference in Atlantic City, Menendez alleged that his Republican challenger, state Sen. Tom Kean Jr., was working with U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie.
"Tom Kean Jr.'s entire playbook has been straight out of the Bush-Rove playbook and now he's even gotten the U.S. Attorney involved," Menendez said, referring to the president and White House political director Karl Rove. Corzine, who appointed Menen dez to the Senate in January, said he believed Menendez's handling of the rental was "appropriate." He flat-out rejected any possibility that Democrats were facing a repeat of 2002 when then-Sen. Robert Torricelli quit his re-election bid weeks before the election and was replaced by Lautenberg.....
"No talk whatsoever of a shift in candidates. None. Zero," Corzine said. "Nobody has brought that up to me and I don't think they will because I believe in due process. I believe in the fairness of our system. As far as I know, the only thing that's been unfair so far is public revealing of subpoenas 60 days in front of election."

This is setting off alarms in the Menendez camp. And his GOP opponent (Thomas Kean, Jr) is already edging ahead.

Dems pick Lautenberg to replace Torricelli
Wednesday, October 2, 2002 Posted: 5:56 AM EDT (0956 GMT)
Under New Jersey law, a general election candidate must withdraw at least 51 days before election day to be replaced on the ballot -- a deadline Torricelli did not meet.
In Lautencadaver's case, the only fitting justice would be that he finally expire when after Corzine is out of office, and a Republican is in the Governor's office. It may happen.
Here we go again. 'RATS switching their candidate at the last moment so their idiot voters won't be "disenfranchised." Don't try this chicken crap in Texas. The "lawyers" and "judges" there won't let you get away with it.
In NJ it makes no difference whatsoever what the law says. The dems do whatever they want. If they wanted to replace Menendez the day of the election they might get away with it. The NJ Supreme court effectively ruled in the torricelli matter that the dems can replace a candidate at any arbitrary time past the deadline even if the only reason is that he's losing in the polls! (I could understand allowing a replacement a few days past the deadline if a candidate was dead or diagnosed with fatal cancer or something, but the court believes just being behind in the polls is reason enough.)
Luckilly, unlike the toricelli replacement, there is no one in the wings with enough name recognition to win, at least in NJ. There's no other lautenberg to tap at the last second. An unknown against Keane won't win. Maybe if they got Bubba to run? Just kidding. Or heck, maybe not. NJ Politics is a 3 ring circus.
But, they may well try if the next poll shows Keane widening his lead.
One good thing to say about NJ.....The 'Rats don't know how to keep their corruptions hush-hush... and/or it's a monumental task to coverup the stench of their concentrated sewage. and blaming the Rove attack machine? Yeh..right.
Hope the sheeple voters of NJ come to their senses about wicked Dems ruining the state.
The more premature talk about switching candidates, the better.
I don't think it's gonna happen, but the cynicism works strongly in Kean's favor and reminds voters of the sustained and inherent corruption in NJ.
Maybe Corzine wants to be Senator again and will nmae himself!! Senators do NO heavy lifting.
Looks like 1 of my predictions is coming true, NJ and Md will be red in Nov
Can't indict him too soon, or they will simply have Lautenberg resign so he can run for this seat will Corzine appoints some Dem hack.
