And as fertilizer it has been prilled which would make it very dificult to use, as is, in an explosive device.

Gee, I hope they never find out that it's stored in maintenance sheds on school grounds all over the country as well.
True-the prills design makes it hard to use as an explosive, but not impossible.
If the OK City Bombers had used explosive grade AMFO, the damage would have been much worse. The fertilizer/diesel mix they used did not detonate at its full potential.
Actually, the ammonium nitrate used an a legal explosive in quarries and construction projects is also in prill form.
What they don't mention is that ammonium nitrate is usually combined with fuel oil to make explosives. There are thousands of tanks of fuel oil all over the country. Why, I have 250 gallons of that "dangerous explosive" right outside the house I live in, and so do most of my neighbors!
Correct. Prilled (pelletized) and coated to retard water (and fuel oil) absorption. And, as a fertilizer, it probably is diluted (cut) with phosphates, etc. What is now sold as "fertilizer grade" ammonium nitrate is far inferior to "explosive grade" ammonium nitrate -- at least for explosive purposes.
IOW, this article is hysterical bunk!
"And as fertilizer it has been prilled which would make it very dificult to use, as is, in an explosive device. "
Blasting ANFO is prilled.
