When Muslims succeed, they are just emboldened. The fact that we would intercede for the Muslims in Bosnia demonstrated to the head-hacking SOBs the we would happily hold the knife to our own throats for their convenience.

It's that whole Strong Horse/Weak Horse thing. I can think of no way to demonstrate that we are a Weak Horse than to be intervening on the wrong side of the historical conflicts in the Balkans, but doing so in such a way that we will not risk even one American casualty. That whole episode was a perfect object lesson in the weakness and fecklessness of American policy.
